The final exhibition of the trans-disciplinary course at Aalto University is a concrete opening to enhance the interaction between scientific and artistic practices. It aims to break clichés related to mathematics by bringing deep phenomena of the field to the level of human experience. Open-minded collaboration across the conventional barriers between disciplines enables the pursuit of diverse goals and aims. The exhibition also presents inspiring examples and ideas of new directions for education, from early childhood to research level. Students on the course come from different Schools of Aalto from freshmen to PhD students. “Sensual Mathematics” is an expression of an intimate, inseparable relation between the sensual and the rational approaches of each team of students towards low dimensional geometry and topology. The vertical artworks of the exhibition create a natural space inviting the visitor to wander into its forest-like growth.

Vietto http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/vietto/ http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/vietto/#respond Tue, 21 Jun 2016 13:45:31 +0000 http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/?p=367 Vietto (Engl. recreation, gradient) is an architectural intervention that rises from its surrounding scenery, the nature of Tapiola. Sustaining the thoughts of WeeGee’s architect Aarno Ruusuvuori of an open space where daylight can travel, it fades the border between the inside and the outside and extends the view from the Northern glass facade.

As a counterbalance to the concrete brutalism of the former printing house, the monumental wooden platform provides room for interpretation. It can be used for a short rest by sitting at the upper end or for extended leisure after progressing towards the landscape. Because of its large surface areas, it easily serves as a platform for a variety of purposes in an exhibition centre environment.

Vietto is the result of a spatial design competition for students organised by WeeGee together with the Aalto University.

VÄRE Installation http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/vare-installation/ http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/vare-installation/#respond Thu, 02 Jun 2016 19:22:43 +0000 http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/?p=313 The installation was created by Aalto University’s Master students in cooperation with the WeeGee Exhibition Centre in 2015.

VÄRE is an interactive installation that adapts to the persons in it. in VÄRE you can read, relax and just be.

VÄRE shows the movement of water with Hi-speed camera technology. It shows the movements so slowly that we can observe how the drop will leave its mark on the surface, diving below the surface of the water, jumping on the surface of the water before it is ready to blend among the waves. Water drops bare similarities to the emergence of ideas, their challenges and the development of processed together into larger ideas.

Futuro World Exhibition http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/futuro-world-exhibition/ http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/futuro-world-exhibition/#respond Thu, 05 May 2016 22:26:23 +0000 http://localhost:8080/psd/?p=83 For the Futuro house anniversary exhibition at the WeeGee Exhibition Centre, the students designed the visual look for an exhibition celebrating the plastic house that spread around the world.

Designed by Matti Suuronen, Futuro is an elliptical house built of plastic elements that captures the experimental shapes, new materials and optimistic ideas of space-age architecture and design in the late 1960s. The City of Espoo/WeeGee owns the first of the mass-produced Futuro houses (no. 001).

Mökki installation at Annantalo http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/mokki-installation-at-annantalo/ http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/mokki-installation-at-annantalo/#respond Mon, 02 May 2016 09:46:34 +0000 http://psd.static-staging.new.sites.aalto.fi/?p=260 The exhibition was designed in collaboration with Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture and School of Chemical Technology. Their inspiration for the work were childhood memories of the Finnish natural environment. The exhibition’s Cabin (Mökki) installation, which brings a touch of intimacy to the tea area, was designed and created by students. Finnish wood and paper were used as materials for the installation. The white forest and tree trunks provided the inspiration for the choice of materials.

The project was developed in cooperation with Annantalo Arts Centre, Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture and School of Chemical Technology, Sapporo-City, The Asahi Shimbun Foundation, Scandinavia – Japan Sasakawa Foundation and HIECC.
