CRYSTAL FLOWERS IN HALLS OF MIRRORS: MATHEMATICS MEETS ART AND ARCHITECTURE

The final exhibition of the trans-disciplinary course at Aalto University is a concrete opening to enhance the interaction between scientific and artistic practices. It aims to break clichés related to mathematics by bringing deep phenomena of the field to the level of human experience. Open-minded collaboration across the conventional barriers between disciplines enables the pursuit of diverse goals and aims. The exhibition also presents inspiring examples and ideas of new directions for education, from early childhood to research level. Students on the course come from different Schools of Aalto from freshmen to PhD students. “Sensual Mathematics” is an expression of an intimate, inseparable relation between the sensual and the rational approaches of each team of students towards low dimensional geometry and topology. The vertical artworks of the exhibition create a natural space inviting the visitor to wander into its forest-like growth.

As Finland celebrates its 100th year of independence, Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture honours its roots in nature as part of Milan Design Week. Aalto University students from the Department of Design are producing an exhibition entitled NAKUNA to commemorate Finland’s 100-years of independence at Milan Design Week April 4-9th, 2017

Helsinki, Finland – 23 March 2017, The forest is central to the Finnish identity from the darkest moments of history to blissful moments of leisure and recreation, the Finnish forest has been standing tall, protective, nurturing and free for all to roam and enjoy. The forest, shaping so many of Finland’s cultural and culinary traditions, has also deeply chiseled Finnish self-perception and comprehension into a strong national identity built on democratic values and never ending technological advancement.

NAKUNA (Fin. naked) represents the very essence of Finland. It’s a raw land of lakes, archipelagos, and forests where the nature and landscape are an intrinsic part of the spirit of the country and its people.

With Finland now entering into its 100th year of independence, Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture will present an exhibition at the Milan Design Week to honour that spirit.

The program revisits the Finnish ancestral connection to the forest as a source of food, emotional sustenance and technological ingenuity as well as a haven for peaceful reflection and contemplation. With its three installations IKKUNA (Fin. window), everyman’s right kiosk LAAVU (Fin. Lean-to) and MANIFESTI, the Nakuna exhibition takes its audience on a sensory journey through Finland’s historical development; its deep-seated values and attributes, all the principles which make Finland such a unique place. The exhibition exposes the core values of Finnishness and encourages people to be open, naked, and honest for themselves and for others; to metaphorically be naked values that are particularly relevant today when the world shows its increasing turbulence.

Material Led Design

Material Led Design installation celebrates the new focus in Colours and Materials at the Department of Design in Aalto University and showcases students’ explorations and innovations from bachelor and master Colour and Material Design courses that took place in spring 2016. These samples are from the concepting stage of material design process. Students studied the inherent qualities and properties of the metals, woods, plastics, textiles, glass and concrete by pushing their boundaries and challenging what is possible. Material concepting sparks inspiration and ignites innovation breakthroughs for products and services.

The exhibition took place on 5.9-11.9.2016 at the Pop-up space in Torikorttelit (Unioninkatu 25)

Nothing to Declare exhibition at Tulli- & Pakkahuone, presents the recent work of design students from Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The pieces on display are designed and made by students studying furniture design, industrial design, glass & ceramic design, fashion and textile design.

The exhibited pieces combine the two opposite, yet inseparable aspects of design; art and reason, thus providing concrete answers for both human desire and need.

Milano 2016: Noni

During the week of 12-17 th of April 2016 a group of international and Finnish young designers studying at Aalto showcased their work in Ventura Lambrate during the Milano Salone Del Mobile 2016. The students created the exhibition Noni around the stark contrasts of Finland that have a profound effect on its inhabitants. The exhibition included designs ranging from furniture, tableware, textile and prints.

Contrasts such as light and dark, heat and cold, lack and abundance all affect our perception of the world and the things we create. Wherever we originally come from, living in such an environment has a profound effect on our perception and contributes to what could be considered a Finnish design aesthetic. Noni explored these themes from the personal perspectives of a group of young designers living and studying in Finland.

The exhibition attracted many design professionals, companies, journalists and leading design magazines from all over the world. Exhibiting at Ventura Lambrate was an opportunity to put new Finnish design on
the map.

Stockholm 2016: Chat Noir exhibition

The fourteen furniture design masters students have designed and built chairs for the Stockholm Furniture Fair.

14 chairs, accompanied by tableware — coffee cups and ashtrays, are displayed in a café setting. The chairs are made of solid ash using slender dimensions 8 × 24 mm and 24 × 24 mm, and are all stained black. The café is a culturally significant place for it is here, where people regardless of their social standing can meet, share, and develop daring, artistic or political ideas.

Futuro World Exhibition

For the Futuro house anniversary exhibition at the WeeGee Exhibition Centre, the students designed the visual look for an exhibition celebrating the plastic house that spread around the world.

Designed by Matti Suuronen, Futuro is an elliptical house built of plastic elements that captures the experimental shapes, new materials and optimistic ideas of space-age architecture and design in the late 1960s. The City of Espoo/WeeGee owns the first of the mass-produced Futuro houses (no. 001).

Stockholm 2015: Utlramarine

The Ultramarine Collection was exhibited at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2015. Students of the Aalto University presented in Stockholm fourteen easychairs, all made of ultramarine plywood and black steel tube.

Helsinki Design Week 2015: Sybaris

The Sybaris project where the students created objects with personal interpretations of sensual pleasure, hapticity and primitive sensuality was exhibited during the Helsinki Design Week 2015.
